Building the Axle

Feb - March 2015

I moved the new bare axle to my home where I have a garage.  I purchased a number of new parts to rebuild the axle from Peugeot.

This included some new brake backing plates.  I had not expected to be able to buy these new.

Not wishing them to rust I decided to paint them.

I gave the bare axle a coat too.

I then started the rebuild.  Starting with bump stops.  It turned out the axle was from a Partner van hence the bolt holes were 12mm rather than the 10mm that the 405 had.  I had to drill out the bump stop holes a couple of mm to enable fitment.

More rebuild.  Now on with backing plates.  Used new Peugeot bolts.

On with dampers.  I was unable to fit bolts in both ends.  Was unable at this stage to compress the torsion bar enough.  This will have to wait until its on the car.

Readying the stub axle to fit hubs and bearings.

The hubs have bearings included.  I had bought these many years ago the last time I was rebuilding the car.  The grease has gone hard hence I decided to dismantle them and rebuild packed with new grease.

Then fitted the hubs.

Then on with brake pipes.

I had bought Peugeot pipes thinking that they would come with the correct bends etc.  I was wrong, they were just straight pipe of the correct length.  I could have made these myself.  Never mind.  They were not too expensive.

Fitted new Brake compensator.  The old one was badly corroded and spring was gone.

I had to drill and tap the ABS sensor mounting screw.  I had not noticed that this had sheared before I popped the part on.  Managed to get it out without any hassle.

Hubs ready to receive discs.

Stupidly I failed to take a completed axle pic.  :)

Pretty pleased with the way it turned out though.  A few things to tighten once its on the car and has weight on it.

Till next time....
