ABS ECU & Trying Out Epoxy Paint

So its been a while.  I have not stopped working on the car, just been a bit lazy about keeping this up to date.  Corona Virus is giving me a little more time to work on the car, and to write about it so here you go.  I will try and keep more up to date.

So today a smallish job detailing the refurbishment of my ABS Control Module.  Most folks with Mi16 and other Peugeots of this age remove the ABS as its a pain to get working and to find spares.  I figured i'll try and retain in and get it working again.  Don't know if i'll manage and I can always remove it later if I can't but I wish to have a go.  So going back a couple of years to bring upto date.

ECU as located in the car.  This is under the windscreen on the passenger side.  The drain hole underneath was a little blocked so a bit of moisture had collected under it.

Part No pic for referance

The Damage to the casing caused by the constant moisture.

 The backside.

The top of the ECU with heatsink.  Noting some odd oval headed screws.

Took the lid off.  The heatsink has a bit of corrosion on it and its a bit dirty but not too bad.

 Connectors look good.

Screw on the bottom that has been affected by moisture.  This will be a pain to get out.

Had to slot it and it came out helped by a big screwdriver and some penetrating fluid.

 Inner casing looks generally ok.

Backside of board in excellent condition.  No damage noted.

Similarly the front side of the board is in excellent condition.  Again no damage noted.  Some interesting old electronics.

There is a hole in the side of the case.  I will need to repair this.

I damaged the sticker in the vice.  I should have been more careful.  Will need to see about getting a replica made.

Started cleaning up the casing with the bench wire wheel.  Most of it came out great but the bottom and side had pitting and the hole.

I applied a bit of body filler to the pitting and the hole and sanded back.  Never used this before so I was curious as to how it would turn out.  I was pretty pleased.  I assume given that its used on car bodies everywhere it will be ok with a bit of moisture once painted should the drain hole be blocked again.

First coat of Zinc based primer.  I used Electrox from Bilt Hamber

Coat 2

Finished off with Black Enamel paint.

A couple of runs but this will not be seen.

This was where the hole was.  Its turned out great!

I cleaned up the heatsink with some wire wheels (forgot to take pics).  I got some new panhead screws to replace the odd oval ones.

 Rebuild Complete.
Top View.  It looks nearly new.  Just got to get the stickers made and that's it done.

Moving on to the painting using epoxy.  I have some 2 part epoxy from Bilt Hamber so I thought I would give it a go on the bumper stiffener.  Again going back a bit here its is being removed from the bumper.

 Quite Extensively corroded.

 I had it shot blasted.

In the time from when it was finished being blasted to when I picked it up (a couple of days) its started rusting again.

Used some Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 to stop the rust.

Whole thing turned black.  I then painted with Electrox.  Forgot to taker pics of the finished result.

Moving on a few months, I had some time to kill so I decided to give the epoxy paint a go.  Mixed really easy - 4 to 1 ratio.  Was a bit thinner than I expected but it went on well.  I brush painted it.  I don't have a compressor or spray gun but I think this would give a nicer finish.

 Painting under way.

It goes on well and most of the brush marks smooth out themselves.

Finished product.  Done inside and out.  After 24 hrs its dry and has a very robust feel to it.  Almost plasticy feel.  A couple of areas were still a little soft where the paint had pooled.  I think these will dry soon.

Had a wee bit left over in the bottom of my pot so I gave the wee bit of the inner wing I had painted before with Electrox a go over.  This will get body colour eventually.  Just wanted to use up the remaining paint.

Thats my lot for today.  I will try and get some more up in the next few days.  Hop you have enjoyed.
