Electroplating some brackets

Electroplating some brackets

This weekend started with a bang, literally.  The handbrake on my Scirocco gave way whilst parked on a hill. It smacked another car.  Not too much damage to the other car but mine came off a bit worse.  Could have done without that.  No one in either car and no one hurt so I guess that's all that matters.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself I decided to start on the the brass parts on the Throttle Body.  It was mentioned before that vinegar is good at removing crud from brass so they had been sitting in vinegar for a few days.

Brass parts after a few days in vinegar.  Cleaner definitely but not shiny. I decided to try some brasso.

A nice before and after shot.  The throttle plates came up like new.  I could almost see my face in them.

I think this is the idle screw.  I was very impressed with the finish.  Its a pity in both cases these items won't be seen when the car is back together.

Did some more electroplating too.

Remember this pulley?  Its from the power steering pump.

Cleaned and ready for the plating tank.  I used Deox C and some wire wool to get this clean finish.

Post plating - Awaiting passivate.

Some more brackets getting cleaned.

A Bracket from the Starter Motor.  Note the grey rough looking finish.  This I have found out was too low a current setting.  I wire wooled it and tried again and it came out much better.

Some random bolts out of cleaning tank.

Completed parts passivated and hung up to dry.  I am pretty pleased with the finish.

A Whole stack of parts I have worked on.

 Another pulley / bracket view.

Some bolts fresh from the plating tank.  These have a nice bright zinc finish.

 Post passivate and up drying.

Really chuffed with these.  They were a lot of work but well worth it.  I hope I can get the other bits on the car as nice as this.
